Jinxy by Linda Snider Ward

A little watercolor of a very pretty kitty. (4-1/2" x3-1/2") I'm working on a very small series of watercolors, using a small watercolor tablet that I bought. They're fun to do but always difficult because of the size.

Reuben

The person who commissioned this portrait told me, "I have a friend who just recently lost her young dog to cancer, and so we wanted to have a custom portrait made of him.  We  want something really special to remember Reuben by."

What a wonderful, caring friend!

Miss Cee Cee

Miss Cee Cee's bow kept slipping when she was getting her picture taken, but I like the jaunty look it gives her.

Pelicans in Biloxi by Linda Snider Ward

this is not finished & I'm not sure if we're supposed to show works-in-progress, but it helps me sometimes to see the work on line, let it rest a bit, then go back into it...oil on 12"x12" gallery wrapped canvas

Girl on the Beach by Linda Snider Ward

This is a 12" x 12" oil on gallery-wrapped canvas. It's not quite finished, but I don't want to push it too much further. I'm trying to loosen up my technique, use a more painterly approach.

Live Oak

For a long time, I've been (occasionally) working on plein air paintings, but had not done any that I was pleased with. I had a vague sense of what I wanted to accomplish, but not a real concrete sense of the direction to go to get there. Recently (it was about 2 weeks ago, but I've been so busy I hadn't had time to post it) I painted this live oak and for the first time felt I was doing what I wanted and starting to move in the right direction.

Freddy

I have always tried to challenge myself when I paint, but my efforts pale compared to the challenges others give me. This painting of Freddy, a Bernese Mountain Dog,  in the snow is the latest. It wasn't so much the dog part, it was the snow part. After much thought, I decided to paint the dog and background, then add the snow on the dog. I think it was the way to go.

Cat Pile by Linda Snider Ward

Playing today with ink pen and watercolor. This is a small, 5" x 5", painting of three kitties at the River Cities Cat Shelter. They needed homes & I wish I could have taken them all home.

Millie

This is Millie. She is a rat terrier who was 16 years old when she passed away last February. She was a great dog with a wonderful personality. She was adopted when she was 3 and was a loyal companion.

Harvey

"Harvey is a black lab.  He is almost two but still acts like an eight week old puppy.  He is loyal, playful, clumsy, and loving.  In the rare event that Harvey is able to beat his brother in fetch and gets to the ball first, his idea of a fun time is playing keep away from Tucker--which thoroughly annoys Tucker, who thinks of fetch as a job, not a game.  Harvey is also a slob.  He constantly tracks mud into the house from his paws and leaves slobber on clothes and couches.  Even though he has been trouble since the day we brought him home, his apologetic eyes and loving attitude always make you smile, even when he's eaten your favorite shoe!"

Tucker

"Tucker is a chocolate lab.  He is always clean, neat, and responsible.  He is super intelligent, intense about playing fetch, and very competitive with his younger brother.  He walks up to bed on his own every evening around 9 p.m.  When he's done with you, he's done.  We have a baby girl, though, who he has a soft spot for.  It's not uncommon for him to make it to her room first when she wakes up crying from a nap."

Cat Movements by Linda Snider Ward

A bit of sketching from life, watching two of my cats move and interact. Drawn in ink pen, then watercolor added. I needed loosening up after working from photographs for various commissions. You can view more of my work at my website

Josie, custom dog portrait by Carolyn Finnell

Josie is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. My first Duck Tolling Retriever. How often do you get to say "I painted a Duck Tolling Retriever".

Henri, custom pet portrait

My apologies for taking so long to post. Life got rather complicated for a while. But, hopefully, it's a little more normal now.

Henri is a very regal young man. His full name is Henri Tomas Bonaparte.

Nitro, custom pet portrait

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. We celebrated with the grandkids on Christmas Eve and spent a quiet and relaxed Christmas day with each other.

This is Nitro. He is 7 months old Deutscher Wachtelhund. He is a great family dog. He's smart, active wants to follow the rules but also likes to see what he can get away with. He loves stuffed animals whether they belong to him or not. Very good with the sad face when in trouble.

Max

Max was a challenge. The only photos the owner had were older printed photos. She mailed them to me and I scanned them in, but no amount of manipulation in photoshop could do much with them. And the one she really wanted to use was the worst. It was essentially a black dog shape with two eyes and a bright yellow tennis ball (with no shading). However, between the clever use of several black labrador reference photos and a goodly dollop of imagination I painted this.

Stella

I still have a few more pet paintings to do for Christmas delivery, which would be cutting it real close, except one of them is local, which means it's only cutting it close. After this I expect business to slow down. Maybe I'll paint something different for a change. I love painting the "puppies and kitties" but a little change every now and then is nice.

Roman

From the purchaser. "My mom's cat's name is Roman and he is very special to my mom I found Roman the year my dad passed away, and this little guy has brought my mom so much joy. He's quite the character, he's very refined, but also mischievious. He gets into things all the time and keeps my mom busy. When he is not getting enough attention he tends to knock things off the counter. All in all he's my mom's baby (corny I know, but true)"

Hazel

Every so often, I do a painting that I think is special. This painting of Hazel, a Bengal cat, is one of those. I try and figure out what makes it special and how I did it ... it's a mystery to me. But that magic moment when it all comes together is fabulous!

I've been pretty busy with my custom work. I haven't posted all of them. Some people have asked me not to, they worry the recipient might see it and spoil the Christmas surprise.

Zoe

Zoe is Wash's sister. Her owner says, "She is our little girl - she is a lot smaller than her brother - but her personality is so big!  Wherever there is something going on in the house, she is there.  If you open a cabinet, or a closet, chances are she'll be inside of it before you can blink."
